Description:
In 2023, MasterPlan secured planning approval for Tiwi Designs Art Centre to establish a new Exhibition Centre within one of its existing buildings in Wurrumiyanga, on the southeast coast of Bathurst Island — part of the Tiwi Islands (Ratuwati Yinjara) in the Northern Territory.
Tiwi Designs is one of Australia’s oldest and most artistically diverse Indigenous art centres, producing ochre paintings, ironwood carvings, screen-printed fabrics, ceramics, bronze and glass sculptures, and limited-edition prints.
The project involved repurposing an existing Carving Shed into an exhibition and archive space, enabling the display and protection of works by Tiwi artists dating back to the 1960s, many of which have not previously been seen publicly. The new facility will integrate with Tiwi Designs’ existing cultural visitor service in Wurrumiyanga.
At its heart, the project advances Tiwi Designs’ mission to promote, preserve, and enrich Tiwi Island culture, past and present, through the continued celebration of heritage and storytelling.
